Summer active fescue with protection from insects with MaxP® endophyte

Hummer MaxP® is a summer active tall fescue that displays excellent persistence under tough conditions and maintains density over time. Bred for soft leaves, grazing management is simpler when compared to coarser type fescues. Suitable for both dryland and irrigated conditions, Hummer MaxP® tolerates heavy, wet and moderately saline soils and is more flexible than perennial ryegrass in hot conditions.

The added protection of MaxP® endophyte means pastures are more protected from insect and moisture pressure. Sow Hummer MaxP® as a mixed pasture with Ecotain® environmental plantain, clovers or chicory

Pasture seed sowing rate (sole): 20-25kg/ha
Pasture seed sowing rate (mixed): 15-25kg/ha

Sowing and establishment pasture seed

For sole pastures, sow Hummer at a sowing rate of 20-25kg/ha. For mixed pastures, sow Hummer at a sowing rate of 15-25kg/ha. Sow 5-15 mm deep and avoid sowing deeper than 15mm. For best performance, ensure good soil fertility and regular Nitrogen applications throughout establishment to encourage tillering. Once established apply Nitrogen regularly throughout the growing season. Tall fescues have a relatively slow seedling growth compared to perennial ryegrass and are unsuitable for ryegrass mixtures.

Fix free atmoshpheric Nitrogen by mixing clover in with  Hummer MaxP®. Sow Ultrastrike® treated pasture seed in spring or early autumn at 20-25kg/ha with 15-25kg/ha Superstrike® treated clover.

Grazing management

To maintain maximum quality and palatability, keep tall fescue pastures below 10-15 cm height. Graze for short sharp intervals during establishment and avoid overgrazing. Management is important – avoid tall fescue becoming too rank, as palatability declines markedly.

MaxP® endophyte

MaxP® is a novel tall fescue endophyte that improves the ability of tall fescue pastures to handle pest attack and moisture stress. Unlike ryegrass endophyte, MaxP® endophyte produces a loline compound. This compound along with peramine, is likely to be a key factor in providing protection against Argentine Stem Weevil, Root Aphid and limited control of Field Cricket.
