Grazing Management Method: Rotational Grazed – Long Term
Pasture Life: 5 years+
Soil Fertility: High (Olsen P 20+)

Australian bred, improved persistence with Warrego GT6, the upgraded replacement to Stamina® GT6

Trialled and tested in multiple environments and conditions, Warrego GT6 is a significant step up in grazing tolerance and persistence compared to older dormancy 6 varieties. Bred to persist for prolonged periods of set stocking, Warrego GT6 provides growers with grazing flexibility, high quality hay, persistence similar to a dormancy 5 and winter activity of a 6. Warrego GT6 is a new generation, highly persistent, true grazing tolerant lucerne. Warrego GT6 was selected and bred from grazing tolerance trials in Leigh Creek (Vic) and Gundagai (NSW) and trialled under the internationally recognised Standard Test Protocol for grazing tolerant lucernes.

Sowing rate (sole): 5-25kg/ha
Sowing rate (mixed): 2-8kg/ha

Sowing & Establishment

Identify an area to plant lucerne in, a minimum of 6 months prior to sowing. Correct paddock selection is a key driver for long term lucerne stand persistence. Lucerne will grow on a variety of soils, but does best on deep, well-drained soils of medium to light texture.

Seedbed preparation: Preparing the seedbed takes into consideration the soil type and cultivation of the soil to ensure the soil is fine but firm when sown.

Pasture seed sowing depth: Sowing depth needs to be managed as lucerne is a small seed and therefore only needs to be sown at no more the 15mm deep. This will enable the lucerne to germinate and the seedlings to rise above the soil to begin photosynthesis.

Sowing Rate depending on rainfall/irrigation (Superstrike treated seed)

  • 5-6kg/ha with rainfall below 350mm
  • 6-10kg/ha with rainfall below 400-600mm
  • 10-15kg/ha with rainfall below 600-750mm
  • 15-20kg/ha with rainfall below 750-900mm
  • 20-25kg/ha with irrigation

Grazing management

Warrego GT6 (of the Stamina range), should be grazed in a rotational grazing system. It is recommended that the rotation period is between 30 – 35 days following grazing during the growing period (rotation lengths may need to be extended during the cooler months due to slower growth). When grazing lucerne it is ideal to graze the plant down to 5cm in height and then have the stock taken out.

Rainfall

Minimum 350mm rainfall per annum unless irrigated
